Well, Labor Day was first celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City. During the 1894 Pullman Strike a number of laborers were killed at the hands of the U.S. Military and U.S. Marshalls. Fearing more conflict and political upheaval, then President Grover Cleveland quickly signed into legislation a day that all workers would rest (and still get paid). Congress unanimously made the bill a law a mere six days after it was proposed. Talk about fast tracking it!
