TAG Heuer Men’s Watch for Yao Ming
Posted on 03. Nov, 2009 by Chandra Coleman in Tag Heuer
It’s always interesting to find out which stars and athletes have special, limited edition watches made for them. Off hand, I can think of two very tall basketball players who can add this claim to their “halls of fame.” One is the Shaquille O’Neal Royal Oak Offshore watch by Audemars Piguet and the other is the Aquaracer Yao Ming by TAG Heuer.
Here, we’re reviewing the latter. This special TAG men’s watch is perfect for the guy that loves sports. TAG watches are sporty chronographs and this is no exception; a great testament to the tallest player in basketball history. Yao is from Shanghai, China measures 7 feet and 6 inches tall and plays for the Houston Rockets.
Yao wears the number 11 and this number is featured in large, red Arabic numerals and is the only number on the dial. Along with his signature, are a small basketball and his printed name at the 6 o’clock position. The crown also features the number 11. The watch case back is engraved with the basketball after the pattern, Yao’s nickname “little giant” and the number of each of these limited edition watches, of which 1,000 were made.
The case measures 39 mm and may be the watch’s only fault, being that Yao is so big and men’s watches are typically larger than that these days. This limited edition watch is part of TAG’s Aquaracer collection and is made from all stainless steel (the bracelet included). It comes with a black dial, date calendar, illuminated hands and indexes, runs on a quartz movement and is water resistant to 300 meters / 984 feet.
TAG Heuer chose to do this special men’s watch because it felt that Yao’s personality and passion for the sport reflected the same virtues that TAG watches do: “the pursuit of success, beyond the self, excellent quality “seamless fit the spirit of the brand.
Yao himself has said: “I’ve always liked TAG Heuer, because we are all innovative, never-ending pursuit of absolute perfection. Every shot could determine victory or defeat, every second will be the crucial one moment, Therefore, every second must be exactly accurate, does not allow the slightest deviation. This is my attitude toward basketball, but also the success of TAG Heuer in the watch industry, the reason. ”
Yao Ming became a TAG Ambassador in 2006 and although he no longer holds this position, the watch is still out there.
