The President’s Choice in Men’s Watches

Before becoming President, both Obama and his former running mate John McCain were both seen wearing Rolexes. Rolex has a history with U.S. presidents and I’m sure they would love to be the “official watch” of the President, but that would run a little contrary to First Amendment: Freedom of expression. In 1948 the chairman of Rolex gave President Eisenhower a Rolex Day Date to celebrate the U.S. victory in WWII. Since then, the Day Date has casually become known at the “President.”
Guess who else wears a Rolex? Believe it or not, the Dalai Lama does and has had the same one forever, but because he never reveals the face, it’s hard to guess which model it is. President Franklin Roosevelt gave a Rolex Day Date to the Dalai Lama when he was a little boy, so it’s assumed that this is what he still wears to this day.
Anyway, moving on to other men’s watches for the President…
In addition to sporting a Rolex, Obama is also known for owning a TAG Heuer 1500 Professional and a Jorg Gray Secret Agent’s Watch – a little known watch that was given to him by one of the Secret Service agents guarding him when he was still a Senator.
Now, skip to when Barack Obama became President. Previous to his inauguration on January 20th, 2009 President Obama received a new, special edition model of the Vulcain Watch, called the Anniversary Heart.
Since 1953, when Harry Truman was given a Vulcain Cricket, this watch has become known as the “President’s Watch.” Over the years, Vulcain Watches has presented each new American President with a watch. In this President Obama watch edition, Vulcain specially designed a presidential caseback 42 mm wide and made it available in steel or 18k rose gold.
Which is your ‘must have” men’s watch?
