New “Liquidmetal” Seamaster Planet Ocean from Omega

Omega has added one unique element to its widely popular Seamaster Planet Ocean collection. The bezel is now made from “liquidmetal” and will be available in a limited edition of 1,948 pieces. Although the name is not yet official, it can be assumed that it will be something like the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Liquidmetal watch.

Alll Seamasters are diving watches and therefore the bezel is an important piece of the watch’s functioning. Being that Omega watches are also luxury watches, the bezel must also look good. This new “liquidmetal” edition is hot.
Up until now, all bezels on the Seamaster watches were made from aluminum. One problem with aluminum is that is scratches easily and this is a problem for those that submit the watch to its true limits. Combining liquidmetal and ceramic is much more durable and looks great, as it highlights the actual numbers, protects them with a scratch resistant metal and adds shine to them. This new bezel is an experiment of sorts and if a success, one would think that Omega would start making all its bezels out of this new material.
Why it’s called “liquidmetal” is another question as it’s not really a single metal, although it definitely has a liquid-like appearance. It is made by combining titanium, zirconium, nickel, copper, and beryllium that like plastic is very malleable, making it easy to apply and to achieve a silky, smooth look.
No word yet on how much these new Seamasters will cost, but one can assume they will go for slightly more than their predecessors.
