A Slam Dunk for Watches & Basketball

One of the biggest basketball rivalries of all time has to be Shaq vs. Kobe. Both are great players who have played with and against each other over the years, and now they have one more thing in common or, depending on how you look at it… one more thing to add to the competition: luxury watches. What’s the connection?
Well, Shaq has his own watch. From the highly coveted Royal Oak Offshore collection by Audemars Piguet there is a watch called the Offshore Shaquille O’Neal. This is limited edition watch that has the numbers “2″ and “3″ on the dial switched to show “32″, the jersey number that Shaq had when he started playing for the Miami Heat. Although Shaq doesn’t play for the Miami Heat anymore, this watch is a great collector’s item for the season that the Heat swept won the championship!
And now there has been a watch named after Kobe Bryant, based on his on-court personality and nickname the “Black Mamba.” Made by Nubeo, this is a powerful looking watch. Manufactured mostly of black ceramic, titanium, and rubber and surrounded by whiskey sapphires, the Black Mamba MVP model, when worn by Kobe makes a strong statement. Kobe is also personally involved with Nubeo, not only doing press, but also partaking in the business and design side, a type of relationship rarely seen during a sports figure and a watch company, but which of course works to Nubeo’s advantage.
Another basketball player making a name for himself in the watch world is Tony Parker of the Antonio Spurs who is the new face of IWC Watches. Married to Eva Longoria, Tony will have to stop wearing the blinged out Piaget that she gave him as a wedding present and both of them will not be allowed to be photographed wearing the ‘his’ and ‘hers’ Pacha Cobra watches given to them as wedding gifts by the Oceanaut. Oh well, not too much of a sacrifice considering that IWC is probably paying Parker a bundle.
As for you, whether a basketball fan or not, you don’t have to make a bundle to be able to buy yourself a hot luxury watch this summer at such discount prices, you head will spin.
